You should know….
Shadows:
- What a shadow is.
- The direction a light source comes from that produces a shadow. Ex. If the shadow is pointing to the East, then the light source has to be coming from the West.
- How the length AND directions of shadows change over the course of a day.
- Sunrise = long shadows to the West
- Midday = short shadows to the North
- Sunset = long shadows to the East
- Sunrise = long shadows to the West
Day/Night:
- Rotation of the Earth causes day and night.
- The Earth rotates on an axis.
- The Earth rotates fully every 24 hours.
- The Earth rotates on an axis.
- Earth is always half in light/day and half in shadow/dark.
- The side of Earth that faces the Sun is in day.
- The side of Earth not facing the Sun is in night. This is also the side of Earth in shadow.
- The Sun rises (or appears) in the East.
- The Sun sets (or disappears) in the West.
- If the Earth didn’t rotate, “day” would last for 6 months and so would “night”.
