Thank you for all of the teacher appreciation and end of year gifts!  I can't wait to head to the spa, wear my new jewelry, and spend all my time reading books with a coffee in hand.  (I'm going to feel so fancy!)  Words cannot express how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to teach your kids this year.  They are truly a-maaaazing!  You are raising impressive kids who are going to make a big difference in others' lives. I am so lucky to have had a very tiny part in all of that.  Thanks for all of your kindness and support this year.  This has been one of the best years I have had as a teacher. I hope you all have a wonderful summer!  You deserve it! :)

Here are our plans for this week! :)

We have been working on a speech that will present a real-world problem and solution to the class.  Unfortunately, we will not been able to use anymore class time to write our drafts.  Therefore, students are expected to finish their drafts at home.  They may share them with me using Google Docs so that I can provide feedback.  All students must have the draft of their speech (5-paragraph+ essay) typed and printed when they walk into class Thursday, May 17th.  Students will sign up for presentation times.  Presentations will begin May 22nd.

Click here to see what we are working on this week!

We have been looking at Notice and Note Signposts that are found in pieces of fiction.  Starting next Monday, students will need to read each night for 20 minutes and try to find at least one signpost that stands out in their novel.  Students should be prepared to share what they notice with the class.

Here is an explanation of the signposts:

4.16-4.20  Math PSSA Week

Looking ahead...

Reading: Book clubs are done!  After the PSSAs, we will be focusing on applying all fifth grade standards within student-selected texts.  We will be looking closely at STAR360 data to set reading goals so that students are ready for sixth grade. :)  Word Masters/Caesar's English Vocab Tests will resume the week of April 23rd.

Writing:  Since April is National Poetry Month, we will focus on writing poetry.  We will celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 26th.  Don't forget to keep your favorite poem in your pocket that day!  We will also be working on writing a persuasive speech (and possibly a Ted Talk essay) which will be presented to the class in May.

Social Studies: We are wrapping up our study of The 13 Colonies and will begin looking at the causes of the American Revolution.  In May, we will be investigating the Revolutionary War.
